British English

Dictation that spells it the British way

Set Saywind to English (UK) and it writes colour, organise and travelled. It starts on British spelling unless your Mac’s region is the United States.

Choose your English

In Settings › General › Language, pick English (UK) or English (US). You can change it any time.

What changes

Saywind’s speech model writes American spellings, so common ones become British before the text is pasted.

With English (UK)

What it leaves alone

Words whose spelling depends on what you mean, like program and programme, check and cheque, or license and licence, are left as they were heard. So are some well-known names, like Center Parcs and Pearl Harbor. Other names can change, so add yours to the Dictionary to keep their spelling.

Other languages

Before it changes a spelling, Saywind checks whether your words are English. Text it recognises as one of its other languages keeps its own spelling. When it can’t tell, as with a phrase of a few words, it treats the text as English.

Using the Mac’s own Dictation too?

Apple’s built-in Dictation has its own language setting. In System Settings › Keyboard, go to Dictation, click Edit next to Languages, then choose a language and region (Apple’s guide for macOS 27, read 2 November 2026).

Who makes Saywind

Saywind is made by Peiser Apcar Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales.

Questions

Is this about accents?

No, it’s about spelling. The setting changes how words are spelt, not how your speech is recognised.

Does it take out er and erm too?

Yes. Along with um and uh, Saywind takes out er and erm when you dictate in English, as part of its clean-up.

Hold a key, speak, let go: colour, not color.
